Holy Cross Primary School educational visit to the Glasgow Humane Society

Holy Cross Primary School from Croy recently visited the Lifeboat Station of the Glasgow Humane Society in Glasgow Green at the River Clyde. After meeting Officers George Parsonage, Eddie McGowan and Lifeguard Tony Coia, the day started with a short lecture about the River Clyde the dangers of open water and with a short history of Glasgow Green delivered thanks to City Council Park Rangers.

Then into the Lifeboat Station where they were shown the boats and many different types of craft & vehicles used in emergencies along with Officer George Parsonage giving a short lecture about the history of the Society and the importance it has had to the people of Glasgow since 1790.

On route downstream towards the weir Lifeguard Tony Coia explained some of the dangers of the river, what best to do in an emergency and tried his best to explain the workings of the Tidal Weir (which was proved even more difficult by the extreme low tide that day), whilst also explaining the fun which can be had using this lovely park in a responsible manner.

Final activity of the day was a visit to the People’s Palace Winter Gardens with Officer Eddie McGowan being bombarded with lots of questions relating to the Society and the river from the keen primary 5 class.

A good morning trip was had by all and hopefully another generation of Glasgow children are more the wiser to the dangers associated with open water and the importance of the Glasgow Humane Society within the City.
